Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Limited, has unveiled plans to transform education in Nigeria through the deployment of NIGCOMSAT’s Educational Technology (EdTech) solutions. The announcement was made during a stakeholders meeting held in Abuja.
Egerton-Idehen outlined that the EdTech solution, leveraging satellite broadband connectivity, aims to bring a significant overhaul to Nigeria’s education sector. Addressing the challenges faced by schools, she highlighted that although efforts have been made to integrate technology by furnishing ICT laboratories with computers, the lack of affordable internet connectivity remains a major obstacle.
She stressed that many ICT labs are underutilised due to connectivity issues, with some only serving basic computer literacy rather than exploring the full range of learning opportunities.
She believes that the shift to satellite broadband connectivity will enhance engagement and motivation in classrooms, foster critical thinking and problem-solving, and streamline the administration, documentation, and delivery of educational content.
To support educational advancements, Egerton-Idehen outlined three key focus areas: promoting numeracy and literacy in primary schools, establishing digital libraries for secondary schools, and encouraging content creation for teachers while implementing learning management systems.
Furthermore, a customer experience and support solution were introduced, featuring an AI-powered chatbot and a call centre system.
During the stakeholders’ meeting, Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, reiterated NIGCOMSAT’s openness for business and partnerships. Represented by communications and media adviser, Osibo Imohoitsike, emphasised the meeting’s importance in addressing challenges and formulating policies and infrastructure to foster entrepreneurship and training.
Dr Najeem Salaam, the Executive Director of Marketing and Business Development at NIGCOMSAT, expressed optimism about the agency’s expanded services and operations in Ka-band broadband. He encouraged Nigerians to capitalise on new opportunities, underlining NIGCOMSAT’s readiness to lead in African technology. Salaam also highlighted the potential of L-band fleet management for the oil and gas sector and maritime services.
