Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL), a private sector player in aerospace and defence solutions in India, has announced a strategic collaboration with Satellogic to establish and nurture local space technology capabilities in the country. This partnership signifies TASL’s inaugural step in its satellite strategy and marks a significant milestone for Satellogic’s entry into the burgeoning Indian defence and commercial market.
The collaboration will kick off with an extensive programme encompassing training, knowledge transfer, and the local assembly of optical sub-meter resolution Earth observation satellites. The initial satellite, designated TSAT-1A, is slated for launch. The primary focus will be on satellite manufacturing and imagery development in India, catering to national defence and commercial applications. TASL is in the process of setting up a satellite Assembly, Integration, and Testing (AIT) plant at its Vemagal facility in Karnataka to facilitate these endeavours.
Commenting on the deal, Sukaran Singh, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, TASL, said: “Space is important to TASL not just as a business but also due to its culture of precision that will help other activities in TASL. We are pleased to announce our collaboration with Satellogic, a company with best-in-class technology and an entrepreneurial mindset. Additionally, TASL will also work with local SMEs for payloads and other technologies to bolster India content.”
As part of their joint efforts, TASL and Satellogic will collaborate on developing a new satellite design and integrating multiple payloads on a single satellite. This approach aims to generate diverse data sets over India.
Emiliano Kargieman, Chief Executive Officer and Founder at Satellogic, added: “One of our core values at Satellogic is accessibility. This collaboration will accelerate space capacity building for one of the largest nations in the world with the goal of enabling the advancement of commercial space capabilities and greater access to critical information for a range of applications such as security, sustainability, and energy. It’s a great example of what’s possible via the Satellogic Space Systems program.”
This contract signifies Satellogic’s second Space Systems customer, following a previous agreement with an international space agency.
