Egypt launched its second cube satellite Narsscube-1 into space last month. The new satellite is set to be released to orbit on November 1, Dr Mohamed Zahran, chairman of the National Authority for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences (NARSS) said in a statement.
NARSScube-1 was launched by Japanese Rocket H-2B JAXA and has more power storage capabilities and higher ground imaging resolution than its predecessor NARSScube-2, which was launched earlier this year. A third satellite, NARSSCube -3, with more advanced imaging and processing capabilities, is tentatively scheduled for deployment in orbit by Q3 2020.
The recent launch is aimed at boosting Egypt’s national space programme and aiding in sustainable development.
With the programme, NARSS is keen to demonstrate its capabilities to develop satellite subsystems while also providing Egyptian engineers and scientists with hands-on research experience in nanosatellite subsystems, which will ultimately bolster Egypt’s capabilities in space science and engineering.
NARSS received a total project funding of about 13 million pounds from the Academy of Scientific Research in Egypt (ASRT) to build the three cube satellites: NARSSCube-1 (1U), NARSSCube-2 (2U) and NARSSCube-3 (3U).
