Eutelsat, Speedcast top teleport operators of 2019: WTA report

The annual rankings of companies by revenue growth are compiled by surveying teleport operators globally and referencing the published results of publicly held companies.

Satellite operator Eutelsat Communications and Speedcast were among the top 20 teleport operators of 2019, according to a list released by the World Teleport Association (WTA).

The Global Top 20 ranks are based on revenues from all customised communications sources and include operators of teleports and satellite fleets. The other operators who made it to the list in order from largest to smallest include SES (Luxembourg), Intelsat (Luxembourg), Telesat (Canada), Singtel Satellite (Singapore), EchoStar Satellite Services (USA), Globecast (France), Thaicom (Thailand), Hispasat (Spain), Arqiva (UK), Russian Satellite Communications Company (Russia), AsiaSat (Hong Kong), MEASAT (Malaysia), Telstra (Australia), Gazprom Space Systems (Russia), du (UAE), Media Broadcast Satellite (Germany), Axesat (Colombia), and Jordan Media City (Jordan).

The Independent Top 10 list ranks teleport operators based on revenue from all sources, focussing on the independent operators at the core of the business, excluding companies whose primary business is ownership and operation of a satellite fleet or terrestrial network. They include Speedcast (Australia), Globecast (France), Arqiva (UK), Telstra (Australia), du (UAE), Media Broadcast Satellite (Germany), Axesat (Colombia), Jordan Media City (Jordan), US Electrodynamics (USA), and CETel (Germany).

Commenting on the rankings, WTA Executive Director Robert Bell said: “The teleport and space sector are undergoing rapid change today, which is stressing all business models and driving a breakneck pace of innovation and adaptation. The average teleport spent 77% of its revenue on satellite capacity in 2013; this year, it was 45%. As connectivity is commoditised, the search is on for higher levels of value to deliver to customers.”

In May 2020, WTA will publish its annual Inside the Top Operators report with a more detailed analysis of the survey results.
