AST SpaceMobile has received approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to modify its existing authorisation for launching and operating its SpaceMobile non-geostationary orbit (NGSO) satellite system in low Earth orbit, marking a significant step toward expanding space-based cellular broadband services.
The authorisation allows the company to deploy and operate a constellation of up to 248 satellites designed to provide Supplemental Coverage from Space (SCS) directly to standard, unmodified smartphones across the United States. The system will leverage premium low-band spectrum, including 700 MHz and 800 MHz frequencies, known for their strong coverage and penetration capabilities, in partnership with major telecom operators such as Verizon, AT&T, and FirstNet.
By integrating with existing mobile network infrastructure, AST SpaceMobile aims to enhance connectivity resilience while supporting critical communications for emergency responders, government agencies, enterprises, and everyday users. The network is designed to enable seamless access to satellite-based cellular broadband without requiring any modifications to current smartphones.
The FCC’s decision highlights confidence in the company’s ability to operate alongside terrestrial networks while effectively managing interference and meeting technical standards. It also strengthens the regulatory pathway for AST SpaceMobile’s broader international rollout, facilitating approvals across multiple countries and frequency bands.
The SpaceMobile system is engineered to operate across a wide spectrum range, including low-band frequencies for direct-to-device connectivity, V-band spectrum for gateway and feeder links, and S-band and UHF spectrum for telemetry, tracking, and command operations. These enhancements are expected to improve both performance and operational efficiency.
Commenting on the development, founder and CEO Abel Avellan said: “Today marks an important step as we continue scaling our network and moving closer to commercial service. We are accelerating deployment of our constellation, advancing integration with leading mobile network operators, and preparing to deliver seamless, space-based cellular broadband directly to everyday smartphones, bringing us closer to connecting people everywhere.”
AST SpaceMobile, which is largely vertically integrated, operates a major manufacturing hub in Texas spanning over 500,000 square feet and employs more than 2,000 people worldwide. The company continues to expand its US-based manufacturing capabilities as it positions itself at the forefront of space-based cellular broadband innovation.
