Batelco and BNET partner on SMW6 and Al-Khaleej cable infrastructure

The SEA-ME-WE 6 (SMW6) submarine cable connects multiple countries across three continents.

Batelco by Beyon and Bahrain Network (BNET) have entered into a strategic agreement to deploy the complete landing and inland infrastructure for the SEA-ME-WE 6 (SMW6) and Al-Khaleej submarine cable systems. The agreement was signed during Gateway Gulf 2025, held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Manama, in the presence of H.E. Shaikh Abdulla bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Beyon Group, alongside senior executives from both organisations. The contract was signed by Maitham Abdulla, CEO of Batelco, and Ahmed Jaber Aldoseri, CEO of BNET.

Under the agreement, BNET will oversee the deployment of critical landing infrastructure, including the construction of the sea headwall, beach manhole and the implementation of fronthaul and backhaul connectivity on protected routes extending from the Cable Landing Station (CLS) to the international gateway. This infrastructure will form the foundation for the integration of the SMW6 and Al-Khaleej submarine cable systems into Bahrain’s national and international networks, ensuring greater connectivity, speed and reliability.

The project represents a major milestone in Bahrain’s telecommunications landscape, enhancing its global network capacity and establishing the Kingdom as a key node for international data traffic. It also supports Bahrain’s growing digital ecosystem, enabling faster cloud service delivery, improved data resilience, and reduced latency — essential for the country’s expanding digital economy and future technologies.

Commenting on the agreement, Maitham Abdulla, CEO of Batelco, said: “As the Bahrain landing party for SMW6, Batelco is proud to lead this important milestone in close collaboration with BNET. The strategic deployment reflects our ongoing commitment to enabling the Kingdom of Bahrain’s digital economy and its national digital transformation agenda.

“The submarine cable systems not only support the Kingdom’s national digital transformation agenda, but also firmly positions Bahrain as a strategic gateway for data and connectivity in the region.”

Ahmed Jaber Aldoseri, CEO of BNET, commented: “We are pleased to partner with Batelco on this significant project, which embodies a vital example of national cooperation in developing the future of telecommunications in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Through this partnership, BNET reaffirms its commitment to developing an advanced digital infrastructure that supports the Kingdom’s vision for sustainable digital transformation.”

The SEA-ME-WE 6 (SMW6) submarine cable connects multiple countries across three continents. With landing points spanning from Asia to Europe, the SMW6 system delivers ultra-high capacity, and low-latency connectivity to support the surging global demand for cloud services, digital content, and international data traffic.

The Al-Khaleej cable, owned and operated by Batelco by Beyon, is a regional submarine network that enhances connectivity between Bahrain and neighboring Gulf countries. Together with SMW6, it ensures seamless integration between regional and global routes, providing resilience, speed, and diversity of access.
