4iG Space and Defence Technologies (4iG SDT) and Eutelsat have signed a Geostationary Orbit and Frequency Licence Agreement that secures the orbital position and frequency rights for HUGEO, the geostationary telecommunications satellite under Hungary’s HUSAT programme. The agreement marks a new phase for the project and follows the binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two parties in August 2025.
Under the terms of the agreement, Eutelsat will grant 4iG SDT an exclusive 15-year licence to use a designated geostationary orbital slot and its associated frequency resources. This will enable 4iG SDT to operate the HUGEO satellite once it is launched. While the specific orbital position, frequency allocations and coverage areas remain confidential, the agreement secures Hungary’s entry into the field of independent satellite operations.
István Sárhegyi, CEO of 4iG Space and Defence Technologies Zrt, said: “Our cooperation with Eutelsat marks the next major milestone of the HUSAT satellite programme, while further strengthening the 4iG Group position as a leading technology player in the region. The contract also underlines Hungarian space industry ambitions and satellite programme, which are recognised by leading global players.”
Eutelsat, with over four decades of expertise in satellite communications, operates a fleet of 34 geostationary and approximately 600 low Earth orbit satellites, in coordination with international and French regulatory authorities. The partnership with 4iG builds on Eutelsat’s long-standing commitment to advancing global satellite infrastructure and communications services.
The HUSAT programme is the largest privately initiated and financed satellite project in both Hungary and the Central and Eastern European region. It aims to develop a robust national satellite capability through the launch and operation of one geostationary telecommunications satellite (HUGEO) and eight high-resolution Earth observation satellites (HULEO) in low Earth orbit by 2032. Once completed, the constellation will be operated throughout its lifespan by 4iG SDT.
This long-term collaboration between 4iG SDT and Eutelsat positions Hungary as a growing force in Europe’s space industry and marks a major step in national technological development. Beyond enhancing Hungary’s space infrastructure, the partnership strengthens the 4iG Group’s digital sovereignty and advances its capacity to deliver next-generation telecommunications and Earth observation services across the region.
