Low latency, real-time broadcast video solution from Thuraya and Quicklink

By bonding two Thuraya IP terminals over Quicklink, streaming speeds can be significantly increased to 512 Kbps, says Richard Rees, chief executive officer of Quicklink.

Mobile satellite services operator, Thuraya Telecommunications Company and the UK-based solution provider Quicklink, featured the Thuraya IP Quicklink solution at IBC 2012, that operates by combining the Thuraya IP terminal with the Quicklink broadcast solution. Thuraya IP reportedly features ‘Asymmetric Streaming’, that allows users to adjust uplink and downlink speeds based on their usage, resulting in cost savings of up to 40% when compared to other solutions available in the market.

Thuraya offers, the company claims, enhanced IP services by routing streaming traffic from its earth station in the UAE to one of two strategic Points of Presence (POP) in London or Singapore, which in turn can have dedicated links directly to the production studio

Thuraya’s vice-president of marketing, T. Sanford Jewett says, “Thuraya IP is a portable, powerful satellite modem. It is the core for our high-performance media solutions designed with the end-user in mind.”

Thuraya offers, the company claims, enhanced IP services by routing streaming traffic from its earth station in the UAE to one of two strategic Points of Presence (POP) in London or Singapore, which in turn can have dedicated links directly to the production studio.  These dedicated circuits reportedly result in faster streaming, optimised upload/download speeds, and consistent performance, enabling Thuraya’s media customers to deliver time sensitive video from the field to the studio without delay.

When combined with the Quicklink solution, the Thuraya IP terminal reportedly enables live video broadcasting at optimised speeds over Thuraya’s satellite network.

Richard Rees, chief executive officer of Quicklink says, “By bonding two Thuraya IP terminals over Quicklink, streaming speeds can be significantly increased to 512 Kbps, whereby voice clarity and picture quality are further enhanced.”

Rees adds, “With this combination, the entire user experience is amplified and our customers can fully utilise the outstanding streaming quality and enjoy its benefits. We expect that the media industry will be thrilled with the superb quality which helps deliver an enhanced communications experience.”

At IBC, Thuraya showcased its MediaComms solutions to the broadcast and media industry as well as promoted its voice and data solutions including the Thuraya XT-DUAL, which is reportedly the world’s only dual-mode satellite/GSM phone.
