International Astronautical Federation (IAF) has elected Eng. Mishael Al-Shamimari as the Vice President, after securing 14 international votes.
Aerospace engineer Al-Shamimari has become the first Saudi woman to hold a leadership position at the International Astronautical Federation after being elected as one of the body’s 12 vice presidents.
Since September 2021, Ashemimry has served as special advisor to the CEO of the Saudi Space Commission Mohammed Al-Tamimi, a position in which she consults on developing a national space strategy, creates and leads space programs, and advises leadership on direction and execution.
Ashemimry was previously a space nuclear technology consultant at the aerospace and defence company Northrop Grumman.
As the Saudi representative, Al-Shamimari’s success in winning the votes of the Federation members is attributable to her ambitious vision for the development of the global space sector. She was elected to the post as she could contribute to the development of the International Astronautical Federation’s strategic directions, in addition to consolidating the Kingdom’s leadership position in the space sector, and developing international cooperation, Saudi Press Agency reported.
The IAF’s membership is made up of more than 400 representatives of institutions and organisations around the world. It has close relations with the International Academy of Astronautics and the International Institute of Space Law, and constitutes a platform for experts from space agencies to research, share knowledge and recognise achievements through its annual awards.
The IAF’s activities, publications and global network prepare the future workforce of the space sector, supporting students and young professionals and raising awareness around space sector issues.
