Nigeria and Brazil sign MoU on space science

The agreement is set to open the door to joint satellite missions in agriculture, climate monitoring and national security, while also fostering collaboration in space vehicle engineering, capacity building and technology transfer.

Nigeria and Brazil have signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at deepening cooperation in space technology, research and innovation, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations.

The agreement was formalised in Brasília by Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, and Brazil’s Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Luciana Santos. The signing ceremony was attended by Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, underscoring the strategic importance of the partnership.

The MoU establishes a framework for collaboration in areas such as climate monitoring, national security and space vehicle development. It also includes provisions for Earth observation systems to enhance resilience against natural disasters and food crises, enabling both countries to apply cutting-edge technologies to critical development challenges.

While space exploration is the focal point, the partnership is part of a broader cooperation framework encompassing biotechnology, bioeconomy, ocean science, energy, space development, digital transformation and advanced materials.

The science and technology accord was one of five bilateral agreements concluded during President Tinubu’s official visit to Brazil. Other agreements included measures to boost diplomatic training and hold regular political consultations to strengthen institutional relations.

Nigeria and Brazil also signed a new Air Services Agreement designed to facilitate trade, tourism and people-to-people exchanges. Additionally, Brazil’s National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) has partnered with Nigeria’s Bank of Agriculture to foster commerce, agricultural investment, and development.

Together, these agreements signal a deepening of Nigeria–Brazil relations across multiple sectors, with the space technology MoU standing out as a milestone in advancing innovation and scientific collaboration between the two countries.
