Democratic Republic of Congo’s national satellite operator Renatelsat has signed a public-private partnership with AUFS (Africa Union Financial Services), as reported by Scoop RDC, quoting Emery Okundji, DRC’s Minister of Telecommunications and New Information and Communication Technologies. The agreement will enable Renatelsat to finance new equipment as part of a Build Operate Transfer (BOT) contract. The new funds will support the operator’s plans to deploy the necessary infrastructure for services based on capacity leased on Belarusian satellite Belintersat-1.

According to Emery Okundji, the Congolese Minister of Telecommunications and New Information and Communication Technologies, ”The partnership between Renatelsat and AUFS marks an important step in the efforts of the government of the Republic to ensure better connectivity of all our citizens in the era of digital transformation fibre optics has only two phases already implemented, Kinshasa Moanda 610 Km and Kinshasa-Kasumbalesa via Sakania 3,300 Km. We had to find ways and means to overcome this lack of connectivity.’’

Beyond internet connectivity, the capabilities that Renatelsat will acquire through its rehabilitated network, will also allow the company to intervene in the audiovisual sector. “Such a transmission network represents for our government a major challenge for the national coverage for Digital Television,” said Minister Emery Okundji.

As part of its partnership with Renatelsat, AUFS will also provide the public company with the training of its staff in the latest satellite technologies and support in various projects to ensure its long-term technical and financial autonomy.
