By Presidential Resolution No. 439, issued on August 19, 2025, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has appointed Dr (Eng.) Majed Ismail as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Egyptian Space Agency (EgSA) for a one-year term, effective immediately. He succeeds Prof. Sherif Sedky, who led the agency from August 2022 until August 2025.
Prof. Sedky was first appointed on August 19, 2022, succeeding Dr Mohamed Al-Qousi, and was reappointed for a second term on August 19, 2023. His three-year tenure is widely recognised as a pivotal period in strengthening Egypt’s role as a regional and global leader in space science and technology. During his leadership, EgSA advanced its mandate of creating, transferring, developing and localising space technology, while laying the foundation for Egypt to emerge as a hub for satellite design, manufacturing, and launches.
Among the agency’s major achievements under Prof. Sedky were the development and progress of flagship satellite projects including Horus-1, Horus-2, MisrSat-2 and NExSat-1, reinforcing the country’s commitment to building indigenous capabilities in Earth observation and satellite engineering.
Dr. Ismail, the newly appointed CEO, is considered one of Egypt’s most accomplished figures in the space and technology sectors. Over his career, he has held key leadership and supervisory roles that have advanced institutional development and strengthened national space technology centres. His previous positions within EgSA include serving as Sector Head, Assistant Director, and later Director of the Space Technology Centre. He also chaired the Space Technology Transfer Programme Management Committee and was a member of EgSA’s board of directors.
With a Master’s and PhD in Electrical Engineering, Dr Ismail brings extensive expertise in managing strategic programmes and projects in space and satellite technology. He has been actively involved in the National Space Technology Transfer Programme since 2008, contributing to Egypt’s long-term ambitions in developing sovereign space capabilities.
