Saudi Arabia has taken part in the 65th session of the Legal Subcommittee of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, held at the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs in Vienna. The Kingdom was represented by a joint delegation from the Communications, Space and Technology Commission and the Saudi Space Agency.
The session brought together international stakeholders to address key legal and regulatory challenges linked to the rapid growth of global space activities. Central discussions focused on establishing frameworks for the exploration and use of space resources, alongside improving coordination in space traffic management. Participants also explored strategies to ensure the long-term sustainability of outer space operations and to limit the growing issue of space debris.
During the meetings, the Saudi delegation contributed to ongoing efforts to shape adaptable international regulations aimed at fostering a secure and sustainable environment for space innovation. The representatives also underscored the Kingdom’s progress in developing its domestic space sector, including regulatory initiatives and policies designed to support future growth.
The Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1958, has expanded significantly from its original 24 members to 110, making it one of the largest committees within the UN system. The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs continues to serve as the committee’s secretariat, facilitating international cooperation on the peaceful use and governance of outer space.
